FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR DAN
Psalm 1:1-6 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! [2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. [3] And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season, And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. [4] The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. [5] Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. [6] For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 46:1-11 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. [2] Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; [3] Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. [4] There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High. [5] God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. [6] The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted. [7] The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.
[8] Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has wrought desolations in the earth. [9] He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire. [10] "Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." [11] The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.
John 8:31-32 Jesus therefore was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; [32] and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
John 15:1-8 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. [2] "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit. [3] "You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. [4] "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me. [5] "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing. [6] "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. [7] "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. [8] "By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
These various Scriptures have one thing in common; they speak of abiding in God and His Messiah Jesus Christ.
Abiding, what does that word mean, and why is it so important in this time in the world and economic situation? We are living in very difficult times, there is grave concern for the future, the future of our nation: will it maintain it’s basic freedoms or will the political class further put pressure on an already overburdened populace to support huge government programs and corporate bailouts? What about our children? The wars? There is much speculation that the end times are fast approaching, what do we do with that?
All of these things drain us. They drain us of energy that we need to cope with everyday life. They distract us from pursuing time with God and abiding in Him. They distract us from enjoying our family relationships and simply enjoying our lives. They put pressure on us and there is a pervasive sense of dread that is tangible.
As people of faith how do we approach these challenges? How do we focus on the one needful thing that is far more crucial than all the forces pressing in on us?These various Scriptures have one thing in common; they speak of abiding in God and His Messiah Jesus Christ.
